[[A direct cable connection is a link between the input/output (I/O) ports
of two computers by using a single cable rather than a modem or other
interfacing device. In most cases, you make a direct cable connection with a
null modem cable. You can use a direct cable connection to transfer
information between the computers to exchange files, access resources, and
so on.]]

I too am interested in the same subject.
The links below mention a null modem serial cable an USB cable.
From what I know the serial connection is slow.
Would the USB connection be any faster?
Thanks.

A USB connection would be faster than a serial port null modem cable.
Very much faster.

No, the CAT 5 crossover cable is best. All that is needed is Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS), the cable, and 2 NICs. Data transmission is very
fast. Total cost at around $25.
