Crossover cable connection and Network Cable Unplugged message

Hello,

I have a strange problem that maybe someone can help me with. I have
two notebook PCs that I'm trying to connect using a crossover cable.
Whenever I connect them, I'm getting a Network Cable Unplugged
message. Both computers are on and connected properly. I have double
and triple checked the cable. I have tried other known working
crossover cables. When I changed the suspect computer, the connection
is fine. The computer that is having the problems is a Dell Vostro
1220C. I am having Dell replace the motherboard after Dell technical
support suggested that remedy. However it connects fine with our
office LAN. It only seems to be the crossover connection. Has anyone
ever heard of this and had another remedy?

Thanks
Mike

Certainly no expert on this topic....but just a thought. :-)

Have you tried a regular network cable? AFAIK, crossover cables aren't
needed on modern units as the crossover is done automatically when
regular network cables are used.

I tried a regular network cable that is connected to a LAN through a
router/switch. That combination works fine. I don't think one could
directly connect two computers/laptops without using a crossover
cable. If one tried a regular network cable, it would not be possible
to exchange data.

Just did a couple of months back with a laptop and desktop so it's
possible. :-)

Might want to take a look a the following:

The NICs just have to support autocrossover.
