every time i boot up my computer the computer indiactes the C: drive must be checked. After checking i get a message that a file is cross linked

You may need to do a hard disk scan for errors. You may have cross-linked and/or
cross-referenced folders/icons/files that need to be re-allocated by your file system
(FAT32 or NTFS).

<My Computer>
<Right-Click> on C:
<Properties>
<Check drive for errors>
<Reboot>

This will cause the scan procedure to begin on the drive when XP reboots
