cross browser image problem

using XP, some images fail to appear in my web browser
(IE, Mozilla, Netscape all present the same problem). no
red "x", just blank space where the picture should be, or
space missing where the picture should be. on all sites
affected, some images appear and some don't.

in the source, there is no line for the image that i know
exists. when viewed on other machines, the line for the
image is present in the source code.

this happens for example on www.nyt.com. below the main
headlines there is a row with images and text, always four
in a row. at work and elsewhere these always appear and i
see the code in the source. at home, no images, no code,
just the captions.

anyone have a suggestion?

Just a thought...but are you using one of the super
fast dialup connections? As I understand it...limiting
image quality is one of their tricks.

I am having the same problem, and here are some more details -
It happens in any browser (IE, Mozilla, Opera).
It happens consistently (with me anyway), that is, the source code
ALWAYS misses any image file contained in a particular directory on
our web server.
If I type in the URL of an image in that directory (rather than a web
page), the browser is happy (no 404 message, no red X) but nothing
displays.
Here's something else: If I view a page which has a link to a file in
the particular directory, the link itself does not appear in the
browser or the source code! For example if the text should say
"Complete list of customers" and the word "list" is linked, then all I
see is "Complete of customers."

I am baffled and frustrated. I hope somebody can help.
Thanks.
