Cron facility

I have a desktop with XP on it. I was wondering if it
were possible to create a process that would wake up by
itself in a recurring manner and post the result of the
process in a shared space somewhere.

You can write a script using JScript or VBScript that can
do this, or if the process already does all the things
you need, and you're just trying to launch it, you can
look into the Scheduled Tasks feature of XP.
