critical update

Sorry, can't find WLOC group, so am posting here...

For the last few days, I am getting a yellow WLOC icon, with a message
telling me that I am missing critical updates from MS. When I go to the
site, it tells me I need to update to IE 7 with security pack (I think
pack....darn it, I forgot now). Anyway, after reading all of the terrible
problem posts with IE7, I thought I would wait to download IE7.

Is the download something that I really need to do? Is the security "thing"
with IE7 an important security thing, even if I still have IE6?

Thanks!

Hi VI,

You are most welcome.

The icon, is an Award given by Microsoft as an active participant in the
Community.

There are 3 different levels that community contributors can achieve;
Bronze, Silver, and Gold. You can identify the level a contributor has
achieved by the icon that is shown next to the author name in the thread pane
(in an expanded thread) and in the message pane; no icon, a Bronze medal, a
Silver medal, a Gold medal, or an MVP icon.

VI, if Mcrosoft Updates offer the update to IE 7, is because is consider as
a Critical Update (for your safety) is up to you to installed or not.
Myself right now I have the offer in stand by. In the page of updates, in
the left colummn, you can HIDE the update and is no offer to you any more, I
put the update in HIDDEN because the yellow shield was on top of me, but in a
few weeks I 'm planning in reinstallar Windows and after that I think is the
best way to go installing ALL the CRITICAL updates.

VI, if you keep your system updated and clean of any malware, I don't think
you will have problems with the installation and use. Also read the posting
in this NG about the experience and solutions for a few people who found
troubles with the imigration.

Hi Village "expert" (Ms version for the other):
As it stands now I would wait a while before considering updating to IE7.
Look at the IE7 News Group posts and read some of the problems mentioned
there. If you're running IE6 then I suggest staying with it until MS corrects
some of the flaws in EI7. I, for one, have tried IE7 and pitched it because
it caused an error code every time I closed the program, changed fonts and
blurred images.

Thanks Engel. I will wait then on IE7, until I feel like checking it
out/learning something new.

Ahhhh........the keyboard. Got my old NEC keyboard out, and it works fine.
Thanks for asking.

My recommendation is probably worthless in comparison to the excellent
advice these other folk can give - but for what it's worth, I, too, have
'hidden' the update for IE7 until such a time when I feel confident that it
won't mess things up. There are some very conflicting reports about IE7 and I
can't unravel them to make any clear sense.

What has to be balanced is the risk of a security issue due to sticking with
IE6 for a while longer, against the risk of my computer getting into a mess
that I don't have the necessary skills to recover from. The risk of the
latter is much greater for people like me, than for the knowledgeable folk
who mostly post here, and I think that's partly why different decisions are
being made about this.

Engle can you tell me how someone like myself can earn this type of award
too?
What is involved and how can I apply.

Well Robin,

I think anybody can earn the Awards.

Let me begin with this: in January 12, 2005 I answer my first post, since
that day until today I been almost every day helping (with no Holydays off),
with the exception of 1 week for vacation, and 2 or 3 days for computer
maintenance. So I think that cover the involvement.

You can earn it in the same way. You dont need to apply. Microsoft read the
posts and the posters rate your posts, so all togheter open the path to the
Award.

Also, keeping a code of conduct similar to the MVP in the NG, pave the way.

The best part is, I never dream or hope to get any Award or anything. And
litle by litle I'm here today.

Read about the MVP, they rules, the FAQ, and maybe you don't have to wait
before you become a MVP, in this way, you don't have the Bronze, Silver or
Gold Awards.

Don't force yourself and don't force nothing. Be yourself, and keep doing
what you have been doing until today.

If you have more question, here I'm, also Bill S. old timers in this NG like
Dave M, Stu, Plun and many more can help you, (sorry if I miss any other
names)

Good luck

I am really not looking for an award, but I would sure like to become a MVP,
as you see I do like to help

no recommendation is worthless, every question no matter what it is, is very
important.
When you do not ask, then it is worthless :)

so maybe I worded that first part wrong and for that I apologize. I enjoy
helping others, have been online for a very long time(about 15yrs in other
places). No I cannot spend weekends (need some time for my family you know)
here, but I try to be here on a daily basis unless I am out at a client and
braindead by the end of the day :)P). I also give free lechures to schools
and local communities to help keep children safe online so that keeps me a
bit busy too.
I actually have learned alot from you guys besides what I know myself and
can apply it to helping others in here and on other newsgroups. I enjoy
being here the most because I think you all are a really nice group of
people and I like being here. I am not looking for a reward at all but i
was wondering how you become a MVP. If it means helping those in here and
it takes awhile to belong, well then I can wait. No biggy.

Hi Robin,

Your original post ask

Engle can you tell me how someone like myself can earn this type of award
too?
What is involved and how can I apply.

I never said you have to be here 7 days a week, I give you a litle bit of my
self.

If I can help one poster every day, I'm happy with myself.

Now, for MVPs here is this:

Microsoft Most Valuable Professional

A posting from Tamar Granor on the Universal Thread web site gives this
account of the origin of the MVP program.

"Way back in the dark ages, Microsoft provided a great deal of technical
support on CompuServe. The CompuServe FoxPro forum was extremely busy and
Calvin Hsia, then an independent developer, now Developer Lead on the Fox
team, created what we called "Calvin's List." It was a listing of the number
of postings by person, including info on both messages sent and received.
Being in the top 10 on Calvin's List any month was an accomplishment, though
we discussed whether it was a good thing or a bad thing.
As the story goes, some of the Microsoft people jumped on Calvin's List as a
way to identify high contributors, and thus was born the MVP program.

Here is more info. Follow the links.

I hope all this can help.

Thank you

Hi Robin

One thing that Engel may or may not have made clear (as the case may be), is
that his award has been given in recognition of the stalwart advice and help
he has specifically given in respect of Windows Defender (previously MS
Antispyware). Not surprising as this is, after all, a MS AS Newsgroup. If
you are using a web based browser to view these NGs and select his name
(right pane), there should appear the number of posts he has made and the
number of assists (Sounds like American football.) Impressive numbers - 4101
posts, users helped 266, questions answered 278 at the time of posting this.
Compare this to someone like myself ;) Who just likes to air an opinion from
time to time but doesn`t really contribute. I`m wondering when he is going to
be a `gold star` general ;) MVP, now that really is something else.

Have a nice day.

Weirdly, Robin's panel only shows 'no information' - not even total number
of posts is given. I wonder why it's missing?

Clicking my name, I see that 6 kind people think I have answered their
questions! Pity THOSE poor misguided souls! Probably wrestling with their
permanently wrecked computers as we speak......

Thank you for being so positive Robin! Actually in this case I think I agree
- I suppose I was hoping that there would be a strange sort of comfort for
Fwall4 in knowing that he/she's not the ONLY one declining to take a certain
action, and that it may not actually be irrational to do so in certain
circumstances.

Ah! Thats because she`s been helping the wrong people. I`d feel priviledged
if they put a `smiley face` after mine...... :)

Hello Stu,

I always access the various newsgroups via NNTP using OE, and I have no idea
what silver icon village idiot is referring to.

It seems that a person needs to read this newsgroup via a web based browser
to see this. Or am I missing something?
