Critical Update Files

T

TedK

I recently installed XP Pro SP1 in a new system. Automatic update shows
some thirty critical updates to download.

I have selected the option to ask before downloading and before installing.

What I would like to do is save these critical update files and burn
them to a cd, so they will be available without another download if I
find myself having to re-install XP. (I'm on a dial-up 56K modem.) How
do I do that?

Where are these file being held after download but before installation?
Are these files saved in some MS folder after installation?

Hi,

Sometimes in a \temp folder, sometimes in the \WUTemp folder. To properly
save the downloads, use the catalog option at the Windows Update site.

Ted,

You only need to download one big file called WindowsXP SP2. It contains
everything your computer should have. The link is here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Alternatively, if you can wait until later this month then you will be able to
order it on a CD from Microsoft free of charge. you will not pay even P&P!!!

Hope this helps.

The link you provided is for "IT Professionals and Developers," of which
I am neither!

I'm under the impression that SP2 does not include all prior critical
updates (i.e., subsequent to SP1). I take it you don't agree.

As previously noted, my XP Pro disk has SP1 but I see that there is now
an SP1a. I'm assuming that I have to download the SP1a file since I
don't see anything that looks like an update for SP1. Am I off base on
this?

Hi,

That link is for the stand-alone version of SP2 that can be used to install
on any XP system, professional, developer, or home.

SP2 includes all prior updates, including those seen in SP1a (which was the
replacement for SP1 which Microsoft had to stop distributing since it
contained a java engine that the courts said they could no longer
distribute. SP1a is the same as SP1, it just does not have that java
engine). You can take any original WinXP installation and proceed to go
direct to installing SP2 and will be fully updated, no need to install SP1a
first. Any system updated with SP1 or SP1a will simply state that Service
Pack 1 is installed.

What you will most likely need is the express install from the update site.
This will only download and install updates that are currently not installed
on your system, rather than the whole 266MB package.

Thanks, the SP matters are clear to me now. I plan to wait for the CD
since I am dial up.

One final question -- is there any problem to slipstreaming SP2 with the
XP Pro CD w/ SP1 included?

Hi,

None that I've encountered, but it's early in the release cycle yet.
