Critical update blew away Simple File Sharing

In our field offices, we have some Windows XP Pro boxes
set up with Simple File Sharing. However, one of the
Critical Updates disabled Simple File Sharing on all our
XP Pro machines!

1. Which Critical Update was it?
2. Why did this happen?
3. Anything I can do to prevent this from happening
again?

Did the sharing tab go away completely, or did it revert to the "classic
file sharing" UI? (Note that if you are joined to a domain, only the
"classic file sharing" UI is available.)
