read a few of the start up problems other people are having. My is a little diffrent.

My computer starts up normally, until it gets to the "Starting windows" black screen. But the thing is, it doesn't get to it, it just sits there. I can try pressing spacebar, sure, that works. But I doesn't let me use my mouse...
Its very wierd.

I've had this problem alot, and I'm afraid I'm going to have the Blue Screen Stop Error very soon. I've already had it, I just formatted.

here is what my event log has to say...

"Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Speed Disk service service to connect. "

"The operation on timed out (time out is configurable via the registry). "

"The device sent an incorrect response(s) following a mouse reset. "

"Could not set the keyboard indicator lights. "

"Could not set the keyboard typematic rate and delay. "

"The GBPoll service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action."

"The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block. "

I am running 2000
and "ntoskrnl.exe" is appearing on the screen. If thats any help.

please. help. thank you.
I was told to uninstall Norton Utilities, I am doing that right now..Why do I need to do that? Just asking..

Could it be a virus?
What program could you reccomend me using, while I am in SAFE MODE, since that is the only way I can access windows now.

Well, the fact that you can access Windows in Safe Mode suggests its a driver issue rather than hardware.

If you go into Windows using the 'step by step' procedure - instead of goign into safe mode - it will only get so far before halting. The point at which it freezes is the culprit. it doesnt sound as though its getting as far as Norton, so i am not convinced that will solve it.

You could go into the System Config Utility (type msconfig.exe from the Run Menu). Click on the Startup tab and disable all the items in there. If the machine works well, go back into the Start up Tab again and activate one line at a time until problem arises again.

With the Software culprit identified, uninstall it.

If you reinstalled Windows, have you installed all the other device drivers off the motherboard CD etc? Any loose cables ?- try pushing them all in again.

Hope that helps a bit!

I would also say uninstall Norton ... Speed Disk is part of Norton and is not a good program for NTFS file system such as Win 2000/XP ... which version of Norton is this?

ntoskrnl.exe is the kernel and an intricate part of the windows OS ... have you installed the latest service pack?

:)

I decided to just format the whole computer
I put Windows XP on there, and I am installing SP2 right as we speak.
Norton is definently not going on my system, it sucks anyway.

Thank you for all of your help, it seems to be working now. If anything is wrong, I'll just PM you guys.

You can close the thread if you'd like.

oh we don't close threads unless you've been naughty ... :D

Someone will come along in 6-12 months time with the same problem and will post here ... they always do. ;)
