Criteria for Query to select all info up to given date

I am using office xp 2002. I have a annual database from 12/1/xxxx to
11/31/xxxx of bike riders, ride dates and miles on each ride. I want to make
criteria to give me total miles ridden for each rider up to a given date. I
have a query that gives me the total miles for each rider of all the input I
have made but I can't make it give me a cumulative to the date I select. For
instance I have input about half of January but I just want to get the cum
miles to the end of December. Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean by "12/1/xxxx"??? Is this a Date/Time field in your table? If
you're trying to sum the hours in all records with a datefield prior to (say)
December 31, 2008 just create a totals query with a criterion on the date
field of

< #12/31/2008#

If that's not what you mean please rephrase the question.
