creating orphan page in navigation structure

I want to move some child pages of my index off the index page, make them
orphans. I read that this is possible, but I can't seem to drag and drop the
pages away from the index.

Move the pages to a position next to the home page, not below it.
They will become top level pages.
Or, delete the pages from navigation view - be careful not to delete
the page itself. This will remove any navigation components from the
page.
Or, Right click the page in Navigation View, and click "Include in
Link Bars". The page (and all pages under it) will turn from yellow
to grey, and will not appear in any link bars.

thanks Ron! I just found the include in link bars option and that seems to
solve my problem. Good to know I can remove them from the index though.

You can also leave them under your home page and right click each to select remove from navigation
