I have Partition Magic 8.0 and am trying to create a partition on my
100 gig hard drive on my HP laptop. It currently has Drive C only and
I want to be able to put my data files on Drive D. I got as far as
resizing Drive C and now have an allocated partition with sufficient MB
but it is listed as a Primary and I'm not sure what to do next to name
it "D" and be able to use it without having any problems.

If anyone has experience with this program in this situation I'd
appreciate hearing from you.

C and D can both be a primary. That is not a problem. I am not sure what you
are asking here though. It sounds as though have already partitioned your
drive.

I have partition magic 7, but I have never used it to create partitions. I
use it just to merge, or join, two partitions. Windows XP makes it so easy
to create 2 partitions that I when I reformatted a while back I let it do
the partitions for me. I set C up as 4.2 gig and left the rest of my 250 gig
drive ad Drive D. I then made an image out the 4.3 gig C drive partition
that will allow me to boot up and put everything back the way it was if it
was damaged or compromised. I am telling you this, becuase next time you
might want to go through the Windows partition screen when you reformat.
That way when you boot up you already have the 2 partitions there waiting on
you.

If giving the D partition such a short name is troubling you. Just call it
Dpartition, which is what I call mine. Parition Magic is pretty good at what
you are trying to do, and assigning names. You don't have to do much. Just
follow the instructions as best you can, because you probaly will come out
alright. On my version, I have to hit "Apply Changes" and then it reboots
before anything actually happens.

Pat:
Selecting "Primary Partition" as you did is fine. At this point you can
select a Drive Letter, e.g. D: if it's available, from the drop-down box.
Then click the OK and Apply buttons to apply the changes. Reboot (you'll
probably have to reboot again following the first reboot).

Confirm the changes were correctly made by accessing XP's Disk Management
utility (Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer Management >
Disk Management).
