Creating New Contact List

Hi,
What would be the easiest way to create a new contact list and import it
into Outlook? I have a School Contacts that is outdated so i wanted to just
create a whole new list. The file extension on the exsisting ones seem to be
Outlook Express but i was not here when it was created. I know where to put
the information and how to grab it from a mailbox. Do i have to create a new
contact for each School or can I compile a master list in excel/word and
import that? If so what should the format be, name of School - name - email
or does it matter?

And what extension is that? If it's ".wab", then open the Windows Address
Book and import that data. The use Outlook and import it from Outlook
Express.

You need to first be more explicit in describing how the data is currently
stored before someone can effectively advise you on how to transfer it to
Outlook.

Hi Bill thanks for the response, i will try to give all the information
needed to direct me in this. Right now the extension looks like it is .EML it
is a folder hosted on our Server under the Public Folders in Exchange. When i
create a new email user I locate that Folder in there left pane - select
properties - Outlook address book - check use as address book. that is the
exsisting way but I want to create a new list from scratch (not using the
folder i just pathed out) so i guess it would not matter which file
extension/way it was done before. What would you suggest, starting from the
begginning, to make a contact folder and which program to create it. I don't
have a preference to one or another i just thought the best way to learn it
was to start at the beggining.

".eml" is the file extension used when you drag an Outlook Express mail
message from an Outlook Express mail folder to the Windows file system

it is a folder hosted on our Server under the

How can an EML file be a folder? What's in that folder?

When i create a new email user I locate

If the EML folder you're describing is an Exchange-hosted Contacts folder
containing the characters ".EML" in the title, it's not a file and ".eml" is
not an extension, it's just part of the name. If it is a Contacts folder
(the Properties pages will tell you), you need enable it as an address book
but once. Certainly not every time you want to use it.

If you want to create a Contacts folder, use File>New>Folder in Outlook.
Specify that it should contain Contacts items. As its destination, specify
any Outlook location you wish where you have permission to create folders.
Populate it with Contacts by selecting that folder and then clicking
File>New>Contact or by copying contacts to it from another contact folder.
Enable it as an address book as you already know.

I apologize Bill, I am more confused about the process than i thought i was.
Your right, when i go into the 'School Contacts' Folder there is a list of
contacts and when i click on them they open in Outlook Express. so whoever
made them previously did it that way but i will start a new list.

Let me ask my question another way. I have a big list of Schools which need
to be updated. each customer service rep will be responsible fo adding
accurate information for their accounts. i was thinking of sending around a
master list in excel/word and have everyone put in that information. Is there
a way to import using any of those programs and add copy to a contact folder
where it would populate itself? If not than i will do what you said earlier
and create a new list 1 by 1 after i get back the master list. In either of
those cases i will create in on my local box. then would I export it out to
my desktop, copy it and save it in the Exchange Public Folder where the other
one is so that everyone can use the new list?

Let me ask my question another way. I have a big list of Schools

thinking of sending around a master list in excel/word and have
everyone put in that information. Is there a way to import using any
of those programs and add copy to a contact folder where it would
populate itself?

It is possible to pass around an Excel file, get everyong to add their
information, and then import it into Outlook. The data can then be
transferred to a public folder. If I were doing this, I'd export an
existing Contacts folder to an Excel file so that I was positive of the
format Outlook requires for importing. The data can be cleared from the
file and the headers kept so the order is correct.
