I have some software that is dos based. I have a lead which i need to plug
in, either com 1 or com 2, which i cannot locate. I purchased an external
usb hub to give me a serial port, via usb. Trouble is when installed
connects to com 5, and the software with the hub says it is not compatible
with Win XP.

Can anyone help.

,snip,

did you look on the back of your computer...
even the most recent motherboards will still have a serial port

There are a number of companies that offer usb/serial dongles. FTDI is one.

Many laptops today do not have either serial or parallel ports. Work
stations are soon to follow.
