Could someone please refer me to a faq or an illustrative internet site
about creating charts, in which average and standard deviation of the data
are displayed. The chart data are ratings for various persons, hence x-axis
is not numerical. Thanks, Marcel

Are you looking to chart a regression line?

If so you can do that by adding a trend line to your chart. You can
then select what method of trendline you want.

Are you looking to chart a regression line?

No, I would like a line graph, where the average data are the points on the
line and for each point a line for the standard deviation.

Calculate the average and standard deviation numbers in the spreadsheet
(see STDEV and related functions if you need to calculate them). Chart
the average in a line chart using your favorite technique (i.e. the chart
wizard). Select the plotted line by clicking on it, then go to the menu
and click Format | Selected Data Series... | Y error bars tab. Select the
Custom boxes and enter the range that contains your standard deviations.
Format the Y error bars as desired.
