Creating bootable CDs with Nero

Bobby

I have downloaded a CD ROM image which consists of two files - a .CUE file
and a .BIN file.

The disk is meant to be bootable but I can't used the CD I created to boot
my PC.

When I try, my PC tries to boot from the CD (I set the order this way) but
just hangs with a blank screen.

What have I done wrong? How do I burn a bootable image?

Cheers.

What software are you using to burn the disc?

Have you ever booted this system from (any) CD previously?

Do you see anything after the bios' POST and device
enumeration screens before the blank screen?

Open the .cue or .bin in IsoBuster. If the image is indeed bootable,
IsoBuster will show "Bootable CD" in the left pane.

You burn cue/bin not as file but as image:
[Nero, Recorder, Burn Image], and point to the .cue.

the format is very fragile and unreliable

I'm using Nero v7.2, Kony.

Last night I downloaded a DVD image in ISO format. Same thing this morning
when I burn the image (using Nero - burnt with problems) and then tried to
boot from the DVD - it started and reported "Boot failure on CD" (or
something).

I have successfully created bootable CDs before so I'm pretty sure that it's
not my software or hardware.

The images are coming via BitTorrent in multiple RAR format, so should I
simply assume that they're all bad images? Is there some setting in Nero I
have to use to make images bootable? I thought bootable images where
inherently bootable?

Is there any way of making an existing CD or DVD bootable?

Cheers.

What does "burnt with problems" mean? Did Nero display an
error or warning message and if so what was it?

Were they created from ISOs or another source of files?

Just to be clear, when using Nero, you're not making a new
compilation where the ISO file is dragged into a filesystem
like assembly window, it is a file->open the ISO then click
burn without changing any other settings.
The images are coming via BitTorrent in multiple RAR format, so should I
simply assume that they're all bad images?

Hard to say, BitTorrent is a questionable source, but IIRC
it checksums files and RAR can too. If there is some other
way to check these files to confirm their integrity that
would be good, or find some other source for them besides
BitTorrrent.

Is there some setting in Nero I

inherently bootable?

Correct, an ISO is inherantly containing all the info
needed, do not set or change anything in Nero, just open it
and click burn.

Is there any way of making an existing CD or DVD bootable?

Yes but it shouldn't be necessary. Then again when I write
"shouldn't", the disc *should* be bootable already. If you
are only having trouble with this one ISO, it might be
useful to see if a different ISO will burn then boot. We
still don't know what the Nero error was though, if any.

There are various ISO tools that can get the files out, like
WinImage, or that you can use to mount the ISO, like
VirtualCD or Daemon Tools. You can supply your own boot
image as you would otherwise in Nero, IF you had one
appropriate for whatever this disc is, or could find one
online. Since Bittorrent inherantly works by having other
participants, you might also ask someone else if they got it
to work and get a checksome on your files to compare.

On the other hand, being BitTorrent you might have been
trying to download something you shouldn't have, and some
other party has deliberately put out false data and you have
no hope of getting this particular download to work.

Oops. Burnt without errors.

I only changed the "finalise DVD" to "yes" (it was not selected).

I am going to try to use ISO-Buster to manually extract the files and then
burn a new DVD using Nero using its bootable DVD option. Will this work? If
so, how do I get it to auto-run whatever it is meant to auto-run when it
boots?

Cheers.

Don't change any settings, including that.

That's the problem with supplying your own boot image, it's
definitely not going to auto-run anything, unless it
happened to be the same thing as was on the CD/DVD though
obtained through an alternate source.
..
I'd have to wonder if this is worthwhile though, it seems
unlikely that only this part of the ISO would be corrupt,
rather more likely that either the whole thing is trashed,
the system isn't working as it once did to boot any bootable
CD/DVD/etc, or when you finalized it in Nero, that caused
the problem.

Well, I also tried Alcohol 120% to burn the DVD - exact same symptoms - DVD
starts to load at boot time but then stops with an error message (something
like "CD/DVD cannot boot. Press any key to restart." Very helpful.

I guess the image is f*cked.

Try a known good iso like the knoppix iso to prove that.

Extract the files with IsoBuster. Select DVD-ROM (Boot) in Nero. Under
Boot tab, check Image file and point to ...\Nero\...\DosBootimage.IMA.
Add the files you extracted and burn.

Thanks. I did that and (of course) the DVD now boots - to drive A. The
software is on drive D and I don't know what program the correct boot
procedure would have loaded.

What are the executable files listed with "DIR D:" ?

Are you using Nero 7.0 or 6.6 or some other version?

Nero 7.0 is reported to have problems burning iso files to CDs or DVDs

Also when you load Nero you get more than one utility. Are you using Nero
StartSmart or one of the others such as Nero Express?

If you are using Nero StartSmart:

first select CD from the dropdown list at the top of the nero window.
second mouse over the "Copy and Backup" icon at the top of the frame (fifth
from the left)
then select "Burn Image to Disc"

after that, just follow the prompts.
