Creating an Access database file from a dbf (dbase) file

I have tried unsuccessfully to open a .dbf file in Access 2003. I downloaded
the dbf file from a website. I open a blank new Access db, click on
File/Open, select dbase as my file type (I've tried dbase III, IV & V),
browse to the dbf file and select it and click on the Open button. I get the
following error msg:
"The MS Jet database engine could not find the object <<dbase
filename.dbf>>>. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and
the path name correctly."

I have the latest 4.0 jet engine service pack installed (4.0.8618.0).
 
Use File|Get External Data|Import...

Access 2003 will allow you to open this file by creating a linked table to
it in the current database -- if and only if the file name is no longer than
eight characters. However, linking to the table may not be what you want.
If you want a copy of the table to reside in the MDB file, then you must
import it, not "open" it.

Thank you John. I actually did previously try the import and received the
same error msg. someone else advised that the dbf filename must be 8
characters or less and that resolved it.
