creating a search

am supposed to create a database.how do i create a main switchboard which will search for a particular information in a few fields, for example, the user will be required to choose the field from a drop-down list,and then enter the information of the desired field..this is for the user who will be using it, assuming he/she is not familiar with access.do i have to use VB programming for this? if i don;'t use VB can this still be done
please help
