Hi,

Is there anyone who can tell me how to establish a vpn connection in Windows
98 SE?
I've installed the Microsoft VPN Adapter but am not able to establish a vpn
connection :-(
The message I get on the eventlog of the server is "There was an
authentication failure of an unknown user name or a bad password.". I know
for sure the username and password are correct.

Has anyone a solution?

Thanks,
Dennis

Make sure that nothing (router or firewall) is blocking TCP Port 1723 or IP
Protocol 47 (GRE).
Can other clients connect to the VPN server? What OS is the VPN server
running?

No there is nothing blocking. When I connect with a W2K client I have no
problems. Now I have a home user which is running W98 and not able to
connect. So I've set up a W98-client and try to connect, but still no luck.
The VPN server is a W2K server SP4 with RRAS installed. In the VPN client
used in W2K Pro you can configure it to use PPTP etc., the VPN client I use
with W98 SE, I can only configure an ipadress but no protocol or something.
Are there other VPN clients available? Or am I missing something on the W98
SE installation?

Connecting from Windows XP or Windows 2000 is no problem!

Is the VPN server a DC or a standalone server? If it is a standalone,
check that the W98 is not trying to do a domain login. I have struck this
problem with W9x clients. There should be no mention of a domain name in the
connection credentials of the client or it will fail, trying to find a logon
server.

W98 works, but it can take a bit of fiddling to get the right
combination of settings!

It's no DC but a domain member. I will try different settings on the client.
Can you tell me which one should be set? It would help a lot...

Thanks
