creating a data file for a counter

I am trying to put a counter on my site. I put the correct
code in and when I publish it, it says that I need to
create a data file first. Any help would be a great help.

The FrontPage hit counter creates its own counter file the
first time it runs.

If you're using some other counter, you've got the wrong
newsgroup. I can only offer the generic advice of checking
your host's support pages, contacting your host, or
searching Google Groups for the name of your hit coutner
software.
