I have a HP Office Jet Printer/scanner. I would like to
scan a list of names and addresses from a scanned
document and then enter them into a mailing list using
Word. When I go to create the mailing list, it does not
allow me to cut and paste from the document I scanned.
Does anyone know the easy way to do this. I utilize
PaperPort 9 as my document manipulator, and as part of
the HP scanner, it comes with HP photo and imaging
software. Any help would be appreciated

Your scanner needs to include OCR software as well (Optical Character
Recognition). When you set up your scan you need to set the scan type to be
"text" instead of an image. This SHOULD scan your document into Microsoft
Word where you will have the ability to modify it as text and not as an
image. If your scanner did not include OCR capabilities, you will need to
buy the software (like OmniPage). Most scanners do include a "lite" version
of some sort of OCR software. It might be as accurate and powerful as the
full-priced versions, but it should work for you.

Do you remember getting an opportunity to set the "Scan as type" option
prior to scanning?

Word, since version 2002, has included rudimentary OCR software that should
do the job if you have nothing better. You will still have quite a bit of
manual tidying up to do to make the resulting list into a usable data file.
