create a subdomain in FP 2003

You don't, the web host must set up the DNS pointer to the folder holding the content for the
subdomain. You should create this folder as subweb/subsite under current FP rootweb.

you have to register a subdomain; do you mean a subweb? (they are two
different things, but the term seems to be use interchangeably).
 
You don't have to register a subdomain. It's simply a dns entry.

sorry, my mistake, or ignorance of the subject!
point is subdomain and subweb are not the same thing. subwebs are a FP
term, subdomain is a general WWW term.
