Hi guys! I've been using this software since you folks recommended it some
months ago. However since we replaced our Ricoh slow-as-molasses CD-R/CR-RW
drive with a Sony Burn Proof, we're now getting "102 error/Disk not
Responding" errors and the program locks up!!!! Of course the CD is
ruined. Anyone having the same problem? Any suggestions.... ?

TIA

What version are you running? Latest is 3.0.116.

Could be worthwhile re-installing and testing with a RW disc.

Alternatively, try DeepBurner. Works for me (Sony CRX230E).

Use CD-RWs until you get the problem fixed.

Thanks! I didn't think of testing with RW disks! :-) I have version
2.2.4. I think I downloaded it from the freeware site, that was about a
year ago.

I think I tried DeepBurner and couldn't figure out how to add the tracks.
There was no drag&drop and no click-and-choose that I could find.

My Sony: 52X32X52.
The Nero software that came with it also locked up part way through....
This is supposed to be a burner&software that prevents underruns, something
I never got with burning Data, even on the old PC. So instead of an
underrun it looks like it just locks up and ruins the CD anyway. :*(
Something must be wrong. It'll burn as many as 8 CDs, then the lockups
begin. There's plenty of space left on my 120 G HD and this PC has 512 MB
RAM.

Just look out you said:

OK. I deleted the old version but the NEW version only gives me burn choice
for CD-RWs of 1X2X and 4X!!!! There is a dropdown window that only contains
these choices, nothing faster. How do I add more burn speed choices to the
dropdown window? The is NOTHING in the helpfiles on increasing speed to
burn CD-RWs. How are you guys (and ladies) burning CD-RWs faster than 4X?
Using them to test the software and hardware seems kind of useless.....

It depends on the drive and the CD itself. Your max burn speed is the
slowest of the two. If 4x is the max available to you, You're probably
using a 4x CD. The read and burn speed (and some other stuff) of a CD is
stored on the disk.

You probably have one of the 1-4x CDRW discs. I would recommend getting
(at the very least) HSRW discs (4x-12x) or USRW's (32x max).

The only proviso is that the higher speed RW discs can only be written to
on drives that are rated for the same capabilities as the disc. The 1-4x
provide maximum compatibility, although for general use you would probably
be fine with the HSRW's.

The idea was to test the write on a RW disc before comitting to using
another CDR. If the test has run OK, you know there isn't a software
issue, and can probably try it out with a full write on a standard CD. If
you still find problems, try dropping back the write speed to 40 or 48x.

That's what happened to me the first time I tried DeepBurner. I needed
to click the Tile Vertically toolbar icon to see both the project
window and the browser window (from which you can drag and drop into
the project window).

OK, I'll keep that in mind. The CD-R disks I'm using are Fujifilm but there
is no speed mentioned on them. The CD-RWs are by Imation and have no burn
speeds on the inserts in the jewel cases. Do they expect us to "guess" at
the speeds? :-))

I did just picked up some new HP CD-Rs marked to burn at 52X. I haven't
tried them yet. I want to use up the old disks first. There's about 20 of
them left. I'm using them for backups.

I did try to burn one of the older Fujifilm CD-Rs (Audio) and all it would
burn at was 16X. I'll be playing with this for the next few days. :-)

$$ It looks that that *IS* the problem! :-) We located some other CD
blanks we bought at the same time, and they say 16X. Geeze,... we never
noticed that when we bought CDs blanks before. An old insert from the same
age CD-RWs has a 1X!!! Problem solved! New technology has passed us by....

Thank you guys/ladies so much.

Just a brief thanks for those on this NG who tell the rest of us about all
this great freeware! And to those who even help us with it if we run into
problems. I haven't bought any software since I found this NG.

I downloaded 3.0.116 per all of you recommending it. Got a question and
a comment.

How does one get the help to display in a more readable format? Mine
shows up in pale blue on white background, in a very small font. Even
with magnifying glass, sometimes can't read some words.

No CD copy function in this version. "Help" says it's not enabled in
this version, but implies it is coming. Serious flaw for me. Had to
abandon my old software because it wouldn't recognize my new DVD burner
(B's Recorder Gold/NEC 3500A); and, this leaves me kind of flat.

I would assume you are referring to "on-the-fly" between two drives,
otherwise there is no real difference between creating an ISO image of the
CD, then burning it to CD-R(W).

If you find the programs help file to be difficult to read, you could
consider synchronising (for offline use) the web page help files instead.

As a possible alternative Google for Deep Burner. I've been using it with a
Sony CRW230E for over a year with no problems at all.
One tiny nitpick with the current freeware version. It now sports a toolbar
button which reads...
"Want more features? Try DeepBurner Pro". Aside that it's very good indeed.

Couldn't figure out how to get the CD to copy to an image file, using a
non-ISO source CD (that's what I'm trying to copy). Clicked File and
selected the option, but all it does it create an image file of some
700+ KB. Then, couldn't figure out how to get it to write to that
file. Copying file-for-file won't work on bootable CD's.

Deep Burner, my ISO writer of choice, also does not offer a copy
function in its free version.

And, CloneCD seems to have gone the way of most offerings--from freeware
to shareware, or worse.

Thanks for the reply, however.

I'm sure Burnatonce can do this.
