Hello,

I'm reposting this message because I made a mistake yesterday and
posted it as a reply to an existing message. Hope it doesn't
inconvenience anyone as I'm pretty much desperate.

Thanks and here goes...

Hello,

I have a network comprised of a mix of 3 win98 machines and 2 win2k,
all connected through a hub and a Belkin 4-port router.

There is also a cable-internet connection that's shared by all (via
the router).

The router has dhcp service and a firewall, but I don't have set up
specifically to block any ip address in particular (ie. it has the
factory default settings).

One of the w2k machines (\\ws04) is having issues with TCP/IP.

If I set a static IP address for this machine (outside of the router's
DHCP pool of addresses), ws04 can ping anything anywhere (in and
outside of the local network) and the other machines in the network
can ping it, however, IE in this computer cannot reach ANYWHERE, not
even if I use an ip address (ie. http://192.168.2.1).

If I set this machine to get an address from the DHCP server (the
router), it doesn't get one. Instead it defaults to the
16x.xxx.xxx.xxx address windows generates when no ip address is given
to it from the dhcp server.

The network itself is working well. I set this computer to use netbeui
for the time being and it can see and be seen by the other machines on
the network.

I spent about 8 hours on this already and the next step for me is
wiping out w2k and reinstalling, but before I do something this
drastic, I'd like to know if there's anything else I can try.

Thank you!!!!

Alex

1.IE issue: sounds like DNS issue.
2. 169.x.x.x: quoted form http://www.ChicagoTech.net
Can't obtain/renew IP addresses from the DHCP server

Symptoms: 1) you have a DHCP client which may not be able to obtain/renew IP
addresses from the DHCP server intermittently. 2) after setup a workstation
to obtain an IP address from DHCP, the machine can't ping others and
ipconfig /all shows Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.x.x.

Resolutions: 1) If this is XP, obtain the latest service pack for Windows
XP.
2) Use the Network Diagnostics tool to identify any failed settings. To do
this, go to Help and Support>Use Tools to view your computer information and
diagnose problems>Network Diagnostics>Scan your system. When the process
finishes, check for any items marked "FAILED" in red, expand those
categories, and view the additional details about what the testing showed.
3) Assign a static ip on the client and ping the DHCP server. If you can't
ping the DHCP server, check the connection and hardware.
4) If you can ping the DHCP after assigning static ip, check the DHCP
settings.
5) Make sure no firewall is running on your LAN.
6) Run Repair this connection if it is XP. Or use netsh to reset TCP/IP
configuration.
7) If it is win98/w2k, remove and reinstall TCP/IP.
8) Try to upgrade the new NIC driver.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your reply.

I just ran WinsockFix.exe twice and the second time it seems to have
cleared the problem.

The first time, I had a fixed IP address (which is what I'd prefer in
order to be able to configure pc-anywhere and not have to worry about
it ever changing). It didn't work.

Then I changed the tcp/ip settings to a dynamic ip address.

After that when I issued an IPCONFIG /RENEW and it complained about an
operation performed on something that's not a socket (talk about
adequate error reporting, haha!).

So I ran WinsockFix again and after rebooting, it worked fine.

I will try with a fixed IP address again and report back on the
results.

Again, thanks for your assistance!

Alex
