WindowsXP Pro SP2

A few minutes after opening a site my Microsoft PS2 mouse functions
erratically. It will jump to different spots on the screen, freeze sometimes
for a short while and at other times freeze permanently while the entire
system stalls and I have to shut down manually. I have defragged, used
AdAware, Pestscan, Norton AV, Postini and cleared the cache. I have restored
to a point when I knew it was working but to no avail. It sometimes jumps to
the top of the screen and the present open site closes.
It may be a virus but I am extremely careful about opening new sites or
downloading programs from sites I am not familiar with. Besides, my ISP has
an excellent virus and spam catcher.

I have posted this problem before but got only one response suggesting that I
delete the inbox.dbx files. This didn't help.
There must be an expert somewhere out there who can solve this.

Maybe you have tried this already.
I would try uninstalling the mouse drivers and then downloading
the most current ones from the net and reinstalling.

You might try taking a look at the cooling of your computer box. I have just
dealt with this for someone and the erratic mouse was caused by the box
heating up inside. Try checking the temp of your CPU and graphics card. Heat
is a real killer of both.

This is caused by the "smart move" option in your mouse properties. Go into
the Mouse in the control panel, double click on it to open the configurations
GUI(Graphic User Interface) and click your way around the configuration tabs.
Look for the "smart move" options and deselect(uncheck) it. TTFN>

My mouse problem began with erratic movement and occasionally it would freeze
resulting in having to reboot. The freeze began occuring at shorter times
after booting up until it finally froze as soon as the desktop opened.
After several appeals to this and other newsgroups I followed all the
suggestions with no help.
Searched for new drivers and found out that I had the latest.
I went to MS Knowledge Base, saw my problem described exactly. Printed off 3
pages of items to delete from the registry, none of which were included in my
registry.

I told a nerd friend my problem and his immediate response was, "Are you using
a Microsoft PS/2?"
I said I was. His immediate response was, "Get a new mouse." That was the
best advice I had from anyone. Got an optical mouse for under $20, installed
it and all my problems are over. This was after a week of fooling around with
searches for answers and useless advice.

Get a new mouse. A real cheap fix.

And it doesn't need to be an optical one. You should be able to but a PS/2
mouse for under $10 US.
