I've had various problems with computers, this one i've had for a month and
didn't have any problems until Friday when I connected and visited a site.
Once i had loaded the site the computer crashed and rebooted. it didn't
happen again but i updated my firewall with the latest free Zone Labs and i
got the free anti-virus software AVG.

After i had successfully installed them and had my drive successfully
checked to be clear of viruses by AVG i connected again on the Saturday,
last night. When I have loaded the site (and I have tried various sites) the
computer closes and reboots, only this time it only reboots to the Welcome
page of Windows XP and then crashes again and reboots and this is a cycle
that I have let go on for five or more minutes on two occasions.

I need urgent advice, this sounds like a virus, but the latest free download
of AVG isn't finding anything on the computer. the problem is alright with
connection to the internet using Outlook Express, it's only when I'm using
Internet Explorer.

Try a better product. Just because AVG says it isn't so, doesn't mean
it isn't so.

I used to use AVG on a laptop but it kept giving false positives. Also it
didn't do as well at cleaning file infectors as NAI does.

I've stopped using AVG altogether because it just isn't as good as the
NAI/Symantec products.

My advice... put your hand in your pocket and pay

You should try some full trial AV's and start scanning to see if they can
find something. I would also look into to taking IE out of its default
non protected state and *harden* it to attack. Like setting the options
to *Prompt on download of signed and unsigned Active X controls* which
stops things from just downloading and installing itself on your machine.

How to securing IE and OE are out there on Google.

Also, you may want to look into following some of the advise on
*hardening* the XP O/S.

There are several free scanners referenced at my web site. See if
Trend's Sysclean finds and cleans anything. See if Antidote with the
powerful KAV scan engine finds anything. There's also KAV's Trojan
Finder there which is helpful for more knowledgeable users, or you can
post a copy of its log file here.

Did you ever install the relevant Microsoft patches re the RPC
vulnerability? It needn't be blaster, RPC has *several* loopholes, and
there are more worms and bugged sites that exploit on its flaws by now.

If this still won't help, do

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=825750

and scan for malware on the trojan / site hijacker level.
