Crashing 50% into saving to computer

I created an hour long video made up with numerous clips, songs, and
transitions. When I am trying to save in Dv-avi It crashes in various
points. The first time 35%, 50%, and finally 93%. Is there a limit to how
much you can convert? Also, my main files are kept on a USB drive and I am
converting the project to my hard drive, does that matter. I was able as a
test to save just the clips and no songs or transitions in AVI format with
out a problem, did it in less than an hour.

Thanks

Hello,

I see people saying that there is a limit...some complain that more than
100 images, some say more than 300 images others say more than one hour of
video. What I can say for certain....I have edited 40GB and 39GB 3 hour
videos with no problems of any kind.

Problems will occur if you use MPEG, MPG or MP3 files and sometimes with
JPeg and JPG files. You should convert to AVI or WAV or BMP before using
them in Movie Maker.

A USB drive providing it works properly will cause no problems to Movie
Maker.

IF transitions are causing you a problem you may also have a CODEC problem.
You can go to my web site and select the OLD WEB SITE option from the main
page and download the program Rename Codecs. Be sure you watch and read the
tutorial before you use it...its very simple and has been used with success
by a very large number of people.

When I added an external Western Digital hard drive I was able to save
movies as WMV to it, but only short (30 seconds) DV-AVI files.... I found
that, by changing the properties of the drive from 'Optimize for Quick
Removal' to 'Optimize for Performance', I could save to either file types
without limits.

Hello,
I am of course pleased that you found a solution...its an indicator of
another problem though...as the rendering of a video file is not time
dependent ... capturing is of course but not the creation of an edited
video back to hard drive...so, were you capturing or rendering.

Rendering. Here is what I know I tried 3 times with the files on the USB
drive saving to my harddrive. Each time it got a little farther, but movie
Maker always crashed followed by Dr. Watson crashing. After the third time,
I decided to try moving all the files to my main hard drives. I was able to
Render back to back without a problem, and it didn't tale to long.

What would happen if the USB drive became unavailable, and Movie Maker could
not access the files?

I was taking files from the drive, and not saving to it. How do you
changing the properties of the drive from 'Optimize for Quick Removal' to
'Optimize for Performance'?

Hello,

If the USB became unavailable...as opposed to busy then Movie Maker would
fall over. It is possible that the failure is occurring due to a Bus
Mastering error between the USB port and the Bus that is.....That would
cause an error as opposed to a busy signal and Movie Maker would fail. Such
an error would have to occur at the point the USB port becomes too bogged
down to respond properly and that would be due to a very large amount of
data being transferred.

So my remark about Movie Maker's rendering process has to be modified so
that in future it reads, The process of rendering a video is not time
depend but large amounts of data being required from a USB device may cause
a situation Movie Maker either fails to deal with and crashes or because
the error is so bad the system itself crashes.

Right, but maybe the same setting effects it in the other direction too....

Go to the drive in My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Properties >
Policies tab > Optimize for quick removal versus performance.

I changed it from quick removal to performance to resolve my issues.... but
take special care when unplugging.

The drive also has the ability to use FireWire. Would this be better for
video rendering?

Thanks!

Hello there,

Oh Yes....use firewire over USB every time...with regard to the specifics
of your problem...Yes again...if the USB data flow is not being what we
might now call dealt with properly then firewire would be the way to go.
USB2 is more or less the same as Firewire with respect to speed...BUT USB
cannot maintain the continuous speed that Firewire can....for your
situation it is not supposed to matter but clearly it does matter.
