Thank goodness for the people of this NG. I installed an ethernet update
from MS this morning and zapped my ethernet connection. Fortunately, I had
bee reading posts regarding Last Known Good. Invoking that and reinstalling
the card's drivers, I'm back on the 'net

I've done a backup (didn't back up any files) with ERD and got a regback
folder with files in it. Are there any suggestions that anyone has that I
should implement *immediately* to protect myself from system crashes? It's
going to take me several days/weeks to scour the MS Knowledge Base and
Google for in depth information.

Thanks,
Dan

Backing up with ERD is ok, but I've found that it doesn't always
work. But it should be your first choice of repair. The best means of
ensuring against a crash to restore you to your LKGC is to backup the
system state using NTBackup. You'll need at least 250MB of space. That
way if a crash prevents you booting into any form of Win2k, you will
have to re-install Win2k over the corrupted system. After that you
restore the system state which will take you back to where you were
before the crash. If you can boot into Safe Mode, then you can omit the
re-intalling of Win2k part. Either way you shouldn't need to re-download
any drivers or applications.

You should'nt use winupdate for drivers, period, unless for ms specific hw.
Use hw manu sites only, and then, if aint broke why try to fix it?

Ooooo! This sounds good. Now how do I back up the system state?

Thanks for the reply,
Dan

I learned my lesson. I'm just too trusting a soul I guess. While it wasn't
broke, I figured "update?" this should be a good thing.

Thanks for the reply,
Dan

Do NOT use winupdate for drivers
Visit your NIC card / mobo website, download drivers, install

Thanks for the reply,

It's an option on WinNtBackup.exe application (see system32 folder). You
should put WinNTBackUp on the Start Button, so that you have it
immediately to hand when you want to backup anything or make an ERD.

It took me a while to find the option, but now I have a backup of it. I put
the backup in the C:\Winnt\ folder, even though Backup wanted to use a
floppy. Which media do you prefer?

Thanks for your time,

Not much point putting it in Winnt folder because in the unfortunate
event of a crash, and you have to re-install Win2k, then you will wipe
out your saved system state. Back it up to either another hard drive,
copy it to a CD-RW/DVD-RW,or best of all a USB flash drive. (512MB or
larger)
