Crashes on booting - after windows update patches installed

I installed windows XP a few days back. Then I updated it using windows update. I saved a "check point" when I had it working fine. Then I installed a few programs without restarting between each. The next time I restarted the computer, after going to the standard black screen with "windows XP Professional" logo, it goes to a blue screen with the message:

autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHEC

... and then it restarts to do the same thing over and over again

I have the hard drive partitioned so that my win98 takes up the C Partition (FAT32). When I had it running, the Win XP showed up as H drive. I am not sure if this would be the problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,
It look like your going to have to reinstall your hard
drive. I had a similar problem, although I had to get a
new motherboard and processor. Any hardware components
could be a problem!

It could be as simple as a "bad spot" in an unlucky place on your
hard disk.

You should boot from an emergency device (for instance your
Windows XP system installation CD) and run verifications on
your hard disk (both logical tests and surface test).
