During i was editing a large file in Movie Maker 2 the program crashed. This
was about 7 months ago. Since then Movie Maker crashes always at startup, i
can't even open a menu, it crashes after 2-3 seconds of runnning time.
I tried to re-install it, still crashes, update to 2.1 still crashes.... i'm
desperate cause i like this program.. it's free! :o)
who can help me?

Hello there,

It must be your lucky day :) I just made a utility program that can fix this
problem...its called Fix-It and its available for download from my web site.
The "Fix" works on the assumption that the last project has become corrupt and
that the "Auto Load feature" is turned on in MM. The fix is to turn the Auto
Load off so that you can start Movie Maker without it accessing the corrupted
files.

Hi John

Thanks for you help. I've downloaded FixIt from your website, when i select
the tab "stop movie maker 2 from...." following error appears: "Failed to get
data for LoadLastProject"....
Is this value in the registry or in a .ini file of Movie Maker?

cheers

Hello again,

I had left all of the error trapping code in and on top of that had not turned
error reporting off...end result A Mess !!

The "NEW" Fix-It is being uploaded right now...give it a minute and then
download it.

Sorry about that. Take note though...if your problem is not caused by the
previous project being corrupt, this utility will not Fix-It for you..

FixIt is still giving me the same error (downloaded it 1 min. ago)....
Is there a way to edit a file or the registry to disable autoload?
(don't be affraid, i'm not a beginner...)

thanks for your answer.

Hello again,

This is indeed Odd....I am beginning to suspect that you may have not got
Version 2.nn running...

Anyway...I don't like giving how to edit instructions for the registry...as you
can well imagine the users in here are often having trouble with
basics....giving out editing info for the registry can lead the novice into a
non recoverable situation....

The Root Key is....HKEY_CURRENT_USER
The directory is....\Software\Microsoft\MM20\Options
and the value is....LoadLastProject

So that I can check what you have against the path above can you let me know
what you first find...I am beginning to suspect that you will find an almost
empty directory MM20\Options....if you do, then the registry has never been
updated...which means your registry may still have version one of movie
maker...and I no longer have those entries on any of my machines from the look
of it.

I have deleted the registry key here and run fix-it and it deals with it as
required....so I am a little confused about what is going on.....

Hello,

Finally, the correct version is now there for download...you can tell if its
the right version...the Help for CD writing is now enabled....sorry about the
mix up...a severe overdose of Idiot Pills mixed liberally with Senior Moments
are to blame (that's my story anyway)

I've checked the registry, the directory 'Options' has several settings:

(standart)
Author
AutosaveInteral
CodecAutoDownloadEx
DefaultTransitionDuration
DefaultVideoTrackImageDuration
EnableAutoSave
OutputVideoAspectRatio
PublishToEmailFileSizeLimit
VideoStandart

....but no "LoadLastProject" around... i think it's already turned off and my
problem is somewhere else... but i don't really know where the problem could
be....

Tonight i'll try to install new video drivers.... i know, it sounds pretty
desperate... but as a windows user since 'ms windows 3.0', i know that
sometimes you solve your problems in really strange and non-logic ways...
if you have other ideas what to try, let me know.
if i find more out. i'll post it right here.

cheers & many thanks

Hello,

Yes, that's another fault in MM...it seems that the entry is not created until
you edit it from TOOLS > OPTIONS....I am just writing the help file for this
very issue...If you download the modified version of fix-it you will discover
that it will automatically create the correct entry in the registry and then
disable the option so that Movie Maker will not try to do an auto load.

.....now it works, "LoadLastProject" is turned off.... i'll try some
"nonlogic" things as mentioned in my last post. i'll let you know.

Hello again,

Great stuff (in a way)

I assume then that your solution is not to be found with LoadLastProject then,
that's a pity...Can I suggest what might be a relatively quick fix (no don't
throw it out of the window)....Download and install the latest DirectX drivers
and the Media Player 9 codec pack from MS...install the DirectX first and
reboot prior to installing the Codecs

It works it works it works.... i have the 'strange' solution!!!

DirectX and Mediaplayer Codecs are already actual versions.

I looked for other software that may use the same dll.-libraries as MM2...
and found out that there were still 2 trial-versions installed:
1. Ulead Video Studio
2. Intervideo Producer

I've kicked them out of the system, reboot the computer and... oh wonder: IT
WORKS!!! IT WORKS!!! IT WORKS!!! I'm ready to do some cool transition-effects
:O)))

The strange thing is, that actually it never worked again since i was
working with this huge file on MM..... the 2 trial versions where on my
computer aready before this whole thing happened. but who cares now! ;O)

Thanks a lot for your help John!!
This reminds me of the days when the internet was much smaller and not so
commercial... and everybody tried to help each other.... :O)
John, you're an old-school internet-user, you're cool!

Cheers,
MoChan

Hello,

Ah Ha !!! you needed my Rename Codecs program then :) Been there Done
that...looking for some one to print some Tee Shrts :))

The Rename Codec program routs out known "problem" codecs and temporarily
renames them. Temporary because you would need them renamed so that your other
software works.

When you first started MM after getting rid of the actual problem, did it load
your last project??? If it did I think a re-think on the Load At Startup option
is going to be required.

Glad you figured it out.....

No, before it was again working i switched the "Load At Startup" option off
in the registry, because i don't want this service to run i'm not gonna set
it to on... it takes longer to start up MM2.... like it is now it's perefect!
:O)

Ciao
