MY COMPUTER WAS WORKING FINE AND THEN THERE'S A BLACK
SCREEN TELLING ME TO SELECT SAFE MODE, LAST CONFIGURATION,
ETC. AND THEN A WARNING REGARDING THE HARD DRIVE AND
BACKING UP THE SYSTEM. I CAN'T DO ANY OF THAT. MY
COMPUTER SOUNDS LIKE A WARPED CD IS IN IT SPINNING. BLACK
SCREEN AND GOES BACK AND FORTH TO SELECT SAFE MODE, ETC.
IS THERE A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM OR DO I NEED A NEW HARD
DRIVE. I HAVE A HEWLETT PACKAGED 3 YEAR OLD COMPUTER WITH
A ROUTER ON IT. THANKS.

Hi Brenda,

You shouldn't post using all caps, it makes the message harder to
read.

You can try to do a repair install using the Windows XP CD.

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or
DVD-ROM drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to
start from the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your
computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that
you want to repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair
process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

However, those ominous sounds may mean that the hardware is failing.

Hope this helps.

if noise is harddrive you need a new one.
