Sometimes Explorer crashes (in XP Home) but manages to recover without
having to restart the computer.

However, the system tray icons of some of my startup programs are
missing. Mostly the programs are running but if the system tray is the
only way to the interface I can't get at them; sometimes the programs
have been stopped.

Is there a freeware to re-instate missing icons of running programs and
to check against my startup procedure and re-start any programs that
have been stopped?

In case it is the file manager that sometimes crashes, you may want to
check your settings in folder options.
Somewhere in there is an option to start each folder window in a new
process, which will improve stability.

Hi,

It took me a long time to realize that some shell extensions will cause
Windows Explorer to become less stable, but it is difficult to find out
which. So these days, I am religious about not install shell extensions,
but Windows Explorer has hardly ever crashed on me since then.

Regards.

FWIW I used to have the same problem with XP Home, but it has completely
disappeared during the past few months, even after doing a "restore point"
restoration, which was previously guaranteed to wipe out some of the systray
icons, or sometimes stop them being hidden. I do not know what has caused
the problem to go away (verily, strange are the ways of Microsoft), but
think that one or more of the following may have helped.

1. Installing Service Pack 2
2. Started using Tracker in preference to Windows Explorer (which often
caused crashes) http://www.tracker3.com
3. Started using "Hibernate" instead of always closing down and re-booting
