Crash.........hope it ain't burnt

Recently had a crash and had to do a repair install.

I cannot get Internet Explorer to work (v7.0)

I cannot get Windows Update to respond.

I tried to install SP2, but it fails.

Any pointers from the group on how to get back online?
 
Boot to the XP setup CD, and press 'r' to enter the Recovery Console prompt.
You want to run the command :
CHKDSK /R
