Crash (Error) Logging for Multiple Bullseyes

My Antispyware constantly crashes and restarts itself
whenever I bring up Internet Explorer or any of the MS
Office applications. This causes multiple bulleyes to
appear in the system tray until I "mouse over" them. At
that point, all but one disappears.

Is there anyway to enable detailed logging in Antispyware
to find out what is crashing it in hopes of getting the
issue fixed? This happened on my last PC and the new one
that I built with all new hardware and a fresh XP load.

I run Windows XP with all the latest service packs and
patches. I also have Office 2003 loaded.

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Chris

That's pretty interesting-- this happens to most users with Tablet PC's, but
if you've just rebuilt a machine, it probably isn't a tablet.

Are you running VNC as a host?

What's in common, in terms of either unusual hardware drivers, or software,
between the pre-rebuild and the rebuilt machine?

This is seen with some frequency--perhaps a few times a week here?--but not
frequently enough that I see it as a big issue. It is very likely to be
something that will naturally go away as part of the transition to beta2.
And, I'm certain that the developers have seen the Tablet variation and the
VNC variation and understand those.

It'd be nice for you if we could pin it down on your system, though, rather
than just say "wait for beta2."

Consider using MSCONFIG and triaging through various services and startup
items?

Start by using MSCONFIG's diagnostic startup, and add things in gradually?

I've not analyzed the risks of doing this with a third-party
firewall--probably experiment best conducted with the Internet unplugged.

It happens to me sometimes on my tablet with SP2 and Office 2003 (loess
Outlook). I haven't figured it out. Some days it happens a lot. Today it
hasn't happened at all.

There's a thread in General with a tablet user, who ties this issue on his
machine, into use of voice commands.

Yes, I am actually running VNC as a host. However, when
I stop that process it makes no difference.

The software on both my current machine and the prior one
are almost identical, so I think it is certainly software.

I did the MSCONFIG thing and seem to pin it down to a
service that runs when I use my Digital Persona
fingerprint recognition device/software. If I uninstall
that software, it does not occur, but of course I can't
use the device then. I have brought this up to the
Digital Persona tech support (who makes the fingerprint
device for Microsoft), but they are unable to reproduce
the problem. Without some more specific logs that tell
precisely why MSAS is crashing (to send to tech support),
I am forced to not use my fingerprint reader as the
protection from Antispyware is paramount.

I'm just afraid that Beta 2 may not solve the issue and
that I may be back to square one.

Any predictions as to when Beta 2 might be available?

Thanks,
Chris

Beta 2 is out in 4 months.

Monitor is right--they've said beta2 will be available "this year."

That's useful information about the specific app. There may be more to it
than just that app and Microsoft Antispyware, but I'll make sure this
information gets passed on.

Thanks again for doing the work to determine which driver was at fault.
I've passed this on, which should lessen the chances of this issue remaining
when beta2 appears.

I hope you'll test this out when beta2 does appear, and let us know either
way.

Bill - I appreciate your help.

I actually posted this issue about 3-4 months ago on in
this same group but didn't really get any help. If you
have a way to search for another post by "ChrisR", it has
a more details about the problem that I am seeing
(including the exact process name).

I figured that since I couldn't get any response directly
to the Digital Persona issue that I'd try for some kind of
method of logging for MSAS to try to troubleshoot it
myself.

Thanks again for hopefully getting this to the right folks.

Chris

Sorry about the (earlier lack of) response. This group is entirely a
volunteer activity on the part of nearly everyone here--even Microsoft
staff.

We don't manage to respond to every question, nor are the responses always
right on the mark.

Reposting is the right response--glad you did it!

I think I have all the messages in all the groups, but I'm not finding it.

I wouldn't worry about it--I've had another user confirm your issue--i.e.
same hardware, same problem. This is likely something Microsoft will have
already run into in house, and if not, they won't have any trouble finding
the hardware and software to reproduce it.
