Not sure if anyone else can help with this problem, when I attempt to run the
"Back up Computer" after a few mins of the back up running I get a BSoD Stop
1000008e.

(Back up is running to an external Maxtor USB HDD)

Any ideas what I can do to resolve this (thing to try and remove?)

True, but that normally is handled by a graceful warning about the problem,
not a BSOD.

FAT32 external drive? If so the backup is probably too large to be stored
on a FAT32 hard drive.

Hi,

0x1000008E is generally a device driver error, does the BSOD message state
what module is involved? I've seen a number of USB device errors with
external drives, so I suspect the underlying problem is here.

It could be one of those incompatible usb drive enclosures that a few people
seem to have come up with. Someone else mentioned trouble with a one-touch
Maxtor just a few days ago. We were asked in TechBeta to report the
manufacturer's product info on the enclosures when we came across them.

Hi Colin,

I'm wondering if it's the device driver itself, or the backup software that
supports the one-touch function (or whatever backup software is in use).
Having more details of the BSOD would help.

The problems with Maxtor One-touch reported in here from time to time have
included getting Vista to even detect it. Other reports in TechBeta
indicated a possible firmware inconpatibility (MS feedback in the ng's). I
don't know personally because I don't have one. The BSOD report is unusual,
but I would just be guessing on that one. The OP does indicate that it is
not the One-touch software but the Vista backup software. At least that is
how I read it. Perhaps the OP will clarify that one for us.

Hi Colin,

Indeed, clarification would help. My impression was the opposite, as OP
mentioned "Back up Computer" as opposed to "Windows Complete PC Backup". I
was thinking it was some third party software, probably that included with
the drive itself.

He was not referring to CompletePC Backup but to the backup utility in
System and Maintenence/Backup and Restore Center. The replacement for
ntbackup. It has to be that one or the program bundled with the drive.

I'm sure this doesn't help, but I can do a full backup to an external LaCie
500GB hdd (usb) without any problems in Vista 64-bit Business Edition, just
did one this afternoon. I bought this drive (cheap) at Best Buy some 6+
months ago.
