Craigs List

I noticed my laptop fans were in high rev mode and a quick check revealed
that the processor time was being occupied by something called
CLUpdater.exe.

A quick google showed that this is updating something called 'Craig's List',
but didn't tell me too much about it.

What on earth is Craig's List? What does it do for me. If it doesn't do
anything, how do I get rid of it.

Craigs List is an online ad area where people buy and sell things along
with other sorts of things done in Newspapers. If you don't know what it
is you probably don't use it and you should get rid of it from the startup
area and/or the registry.

I don't use it; never have used it and have no intention of using it. I
couldn't find anything in my startup (using msconfig). So how do I get rid
of it?

Is it running before you do anything else on your machine? From what I
understand, it considered a Widget (whatever that means) and is somehow
connected to browsing. Once you have identified what gets started this
thing, you will have a better chance to understand how it got where it
is and how to remove it.

Craig's List is a web site and I don't think that file has anything to do
with it. More likely it is associated with some program on your PC such as
Powerdvd8. Do a search for the file on your C: partition to see where it is
located--that might give you a clue as to what it belongs to.

Is it an Add On in Internet Explorer which can be disabled?

Try and find the file CLUpdater.exe on your disk, right click on it and
choose properties. There should be a version tab, with details of the
program's source. It's more likely to be something to do with CyberLink
PowerDVD.

If it is indeed Craigslist, you should be asking yourself how you
managed to get on your machine. Was someone else responsible?

Are you saying that PowerDVD somehow uses Craigslist or that it uses an
updating utility with the same name as the real craig's list? What would
PowerDVD be updating that takes so long?

If it is craig's list, I am less concerned with how it got there and more
concerned with getting rid of it.

CraigsList is much like the classified section of your newspaper. Except
that it doesn't accept ads for guns but it does accept ads for prostitutes
("Erotic Services").

I'm supposing CLUpdater is for those who want to be the first customer for a
new, er, service.

Is "CLSearch" or anything with the word "Craigslist" found in Add/Remove
Programs?

Start | Run | msconfig | Startup: Is CLUpdater.exe listed here? If so, in
which folder is this file located?

The OP following the exercise I mentioned will most likely find this has
absolutely nothing to do with Craigslist.

What would
PowerDVD be updating that takes so long?

It might be looking for application file updates and having a bad time
doing so. Dunno. Perhaps now that the OP has found its something to do
with PowerDVD (or whatever it is) he can let loose the magical powers of
google on solving this issue, or followup with another post, or trawl

Hello,

I have Cyberlink PowerDVD, and its update program is a dll called
WebUpdate.dll which is activated upon startup every time powerdvd is
started. It checks for updates and notifies the owner if any are available.
Then it shuts down. It can be disabled within the program itself by pressing
the little picture of a hammer and chisel, and going to the "Player" tab and
clearing the box next to "Automatically connect internet for software
update."

That said, CLUpdater is most likely as originally suspected, the Craig's
List updater that PA Bear posted a link to.

It was probably installed automatically by one of the last 2 or more
programs you most recently installed on your computer. For example, Adobe
and other highly reputable software companies are paid by Google to add an
option to install their toolbar when you download and install their flash
player or shockwave programs.

If you don't look before you click, you will install the toolbar when you
install the latest one of these programs. This is becoming a more common
practice, and it is perfectly legal as long as the consumer is given an
option to choose not to install the extra program. Unfortunately, this
option is not always easy to see by those of us who don't always take time
to read before we click.

So go to start - control panel - add or remove programs, and look for an
entry relating to, "Craig's List Updater" or "CLUpdater", or anything that
relates to this unwanted program.

Click on it and choose "remove", and you should have no more problems with
it.

Well it is found in a path like this?

c:\program files\cyberlink\powerdvd8\evoparser\clupdater.exe

First thing I do in cases like this is find it with a file finder
utility. Once found, I would rename it to say with a *.ex extension.
Sometimes I add .DEL to the filename so I can search them later and
delete them if I learn I don't need them. That should stop it from
running when you reboot. If it won't let you rename it, try under safe
mode. Or run another OS and rename it that way. Now reboot and report
back if it is gone or not. You might be done at this point depending on
what happens.

Very likely not.

We don't have the results of the user finding the file, finding it's
properties and reading us the information about it.

Adrian C,

You may be correct on that. Someone posted a message I missed or that showed
up after mine a location of this program in Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 in a folder
I don't have in my version. So, I might humbly concede my potential error.
Also, since there are some parts of the program with similar spellings
beginning with capital letters in the same fashion, I could even more easily
stand corrected on this matter, especially since there is a poster in the
cyberlink forum who refers to CLUpdater starting when he failed to get
another cyberlink program called, "Power2Go" to work properly. The link to
which this refers is as follows:

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/2643.page

Now, that said, I have done even further research by googling "CLUpdater"
and found the most relevant hits relating to the Craig's List widget. I
found no references to any of Cyberlink's software until 6 pages into the
Google search results which was a certification of cleanliness by McAfee
Site Advisor for Cyberlink.com.

So it seems that the assumptions that this program is either a part of a
Cyberlink program or the Craig's List widget which just happens to be named
"CLUpdater" can both be considered correct until MI-5 3/4 is able to
identify the program by verifying its location and how it loads itself.

The best way to find this out is for MI-5 3/4 to do a search on the computer
in question for "CLUpdater" or "clupdater" to see where it is located. Then
follow the proper instructions for disabling or removal of this program.

So, once again, I ask that MI-5 3/4 review my previous post to find a way
within PowerDVD to disable the "update" software. If it is another Cyberlink
program that uses this updating program, then I suggest looking for a way to
disable this program within that software in a similar way. If that is
difficult to do, go to the Cyberlink website and post a question on how to
eliminate or disable this program.

If on the other hand it is a Craig's List widget that got installed by
accident, it should easily be removed by the method I also outlined in my
previous post.

I had already looked there, but there is no mention.

Strangely, CLUpdater started running again last night. After I stopped it,
I did a search for CLUpdater.exe as someone suggested. A file of that name
does not exist on my machine unless it is being shielded in some way.

I have not established that it is to do with PowerDVD, that was your theory,
but I was answering your theory with a question. As I responded to someone
else, CLUpdater.exe started running again last night, but, there does not
appear to be a file of that name on the machine (unless it's cloaked)
