Crackling AC'97

Has anyone found a solid solution to this problem?

Running the latest Realtek drivers, on an Asus K8N (nForce 3) & ATI x800
video card

the audio works well sometimes, but more often than not is very
choppy/crackly.

Nvidia (realtek chip) drivers have occasional crackles when playing
WAV and MP3. Forget playing a DVD movie, Just LOUD noise before WMP
pops a "licence issue" problem box and shuts down when you click OK.
