Hello,

Thanks for whatever help comes my why.

I have an external Backpack CD rewriter on my XP laptop,
connected with a USB connection. I use it to back up my
files, which are mostly word processor and email files and
a few pictures.

No matter what CD I put into the CD rewriter, the computer
seems to randomly decide how much total space is on the CD
and how much of it is unused and available to write on. No
matter what CD I put in it thinks it is the same CD. At
random intervals, (usually the next time I try to use the
CD rewriter) the computer will think the amount of free
and used space on the CD has changed.

The amounts of free and used space the computer thinks is
on a CD never match what is actually on the CD. For
example - the computer may think there is ony 120 MB of
space, with 30 MG of it free for additional data storage,
but the CD will actually have 700MB wiht only 350 MB used.
Even thought the computer thinks there are only 120 MB on
the CD, it will let me access and use all 350 MB of the
data on the CD.

The problem is that since the computer thinks there is
only 30MB of free space, it will only let me save data to
the CD in chunks less than 30 MB. It will let me do this
over and over again, because it continues to think there
are 120 MB of space with 30 MB of it free.

This is a big trouble when it decides that there are only
22 MB of space and they are all used. In that case it
won't let me save anything to the CD, because it doesn't
think there is any space.

I have down loaded and installed the driver for the
Backpack CD-rewriter many times to try to fix it.

Doesn anyone know how I can get the computer to read the
summary of what is on the CD correctly?

Thanks

Gene

Gene, i will not be much help probably, but this rings a bell for me somehow. Chek your hardware settings and see how the external cd is recognized . Seems like if it is thinking that there is 120 meg on some device and yet let you access the physical 350mb (does this mean you can write to the 350 as well? ) there's a conflict in your hardware somewhere. The old Imation superdisks were 120 mb and were external. Seems like i had this prob long ago.
Sorry i can not be of further help.
