Hi,

All things being equal, if all the componants in a computer are working
properly, it is possible to start it up without a CPU?

Also would you be able to get access to the bios without a hard drive being
attached?

Ta.

It depends what you mean by "start-up". You can see if your are getting
power to the board but that's about all. You might also get a POST code but
without a cpu your can't get video. Without video you can't tell much else.

Yes you can access the BIOS without a hard drive. You need to have at
minimum power supply, video, cpu, RAM and keyboard to get into the BIOS
settings.

Hi, thats what I thought.

I've got this setup that 'isnt' working. Everything seems to be seated
correctly, and the motherboard light comes on and the CPU fan spins up, but
I get nothing. No access to the BIOS either.

I've tried it in two motherboards with a variety of hard drive cables, but
still nothing.

Could this be the CPU not working or some other part of the setup?

Thanks.

If you are seeing the same problem with the same cpu being tried in
different boards then the problem is highly likely to be the cpu.

What I do is I use a completely bare bones setup. Known good motherboard,
video, RAM, and power supply plugged in. I short the power switch pins with
a screwdriver to fire up the board. It should post. If not then the cpu is
fried. -
