Hi Guys,

Just installed BETA 2 on a machine with a 1.3 Celeron CPU with 512MB ram
which I would of thought would be ideal for just general testing - but having
some performance issues:

While idle or running general windows explorer tasks, the CPU Usage is
unreal! In excess of 80% most of the time to simple run windows explorer. Is
anyone else experiencing these kind of performance issues as I am greatly
concerned that simple OS tasks on a CPU such as this is being completely
KILLED!

Has anyone got any suggestions or indeed experiencing the same kind of thing?

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks
Pierce

Fulfilling the minimum requirements does not guarantee a smooth work;
in your case, it's both the slow Celi and the small amount of RAM
which prevent you from enjoying Vista.

You need something like a Sempron 2800+ or Athlon 3000+ and 1024 MB
RAM - otherwise don't complain;-)

(Your next topic will be an adequate video card;-)

If you have an nvidia, switch to an ati.
Search google news for details on that.

I am currently testing Vista 5284 on a Tualatin Celeron [email protected]. A setup
similiar to yours. I am running with 640MB of Ram @ 124mhz, using a PCI
GeForce FX5200. I am using the 88.61 drivers from Nvidia. My idle cpu usage
is around 3-5% and my idle mem usage is roughly 50% +/- 3%. I am using as
many features as my system will tolerate. These DO include Aero Glass
w/transparency, the Sidebar w/the CPU Gadget. I have disabled items such as
the fading/sliding of menus and windows AND disabled Drive Indexing for
improved HD performance. My HD is an EIDE 200GB @ DMA 5 ,as this is the
maximum my motherboard allows. My chipset is a Via Apollo Pro Tualatin,
694t, but I have not loaded any separate Via drivers into Vista.

My Performanc is next to identical to WinXP Pro on another partition, with
the exception of the MEM usage which is conciderably higher in VISTA due to
the increased visual elements. If you would like some help determining what
exactly is using your resources so rapidly I would be glad to continue
posting to help you sort it out since we have similiar system specs.

Elirah,

Sounds like limiting certain features might be the best option for this
particuarl machine. I am just most confused as to why it really is using such
a considerable level of CPU power at such general tasks.

Also, keep in mind that as a beta the software is probably not yet fully
optimized for efficiency.

I didnt have seem to have those problems. I am planning on a upgrade soon
too. Vista is going to have many people upgrading for the eye candy.

YES! Microsoft lift up the market of Intel again. We must upgrade our
hardware now...Oh,sorry,not upgrade but REPLACE!
If you want to have Windows Vista gives an good speed, you should have the
following:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8E or more
2Giga Bytes of Memory
256M Graphic Card
SATA or SCSI device
DVD ROM/WR at least.
