Well, you are completely wrong in your assumptions! Microsoft does not
employ any "tagging" of your usage of XP. In order for your assumption
to be credible, you'll have to provide precise documentation, of which
you have none. You are just paranoid!

| Karna,
|
| I do not believe it is a virus, but rather a tagging system Microsoft uses
| to keep track of your usage of XP (see "CPU Usage" and "Microsoft Spyware"
| under microsoft.public.windowsxp.general). I have had a similar problem, as
| have a number of others. You can discover this with a search of newsgroups
| and websites looking for the appropriate keywords. The issue is, however,
| not addressed in Microsoft's Knowledge base (at least as I have been able to
| determine).
|
| I am getting a lot of flack for addressing this issue, so do be careful. If
| the tagging is happening, then ... well ... I did not used to be fearful and
| have been a devotee of MS, but I am much less sanguine now. So .... just
| watch yourself.
|
| I came to this conclusion after rather careful serial elimination of
| alternative explanations over a solid two weeks of work on the issue., e.g.,
| checking for viruses (none found), and serially removing software then
| reformatting, etc., done on clean reformatted drives. I can only replicate
| the problem when I activate XP. (As I said, this seems to hit a nerve, so
| ...). I have temporarily solved the problem by reformatting my drive (for
| the umpteenth time), then reinstalling (only) XP WITHOUT ACTIVATING OR
| REGISTERING (skip this step). I also reinstalled Norton Antivirus and
| ZoneAlarm in addition to XP's firewall. This will work for 30 days. I intend
| to contact MS in the meantime to ask them why the tagging.
|
| I wish you luck. Apparently we are on our own here. Like I said, I get a lot
| of flack and not much help when mentioning this. Take a look at what others
| have been doing by looking at the other threads related to this.
