My task manager shows that a file in my Windows System 32
folder called ntvdm.exe is using 95% of my CPU
constantly. This causes all of my other programs to run
very slow. When I tell it to "end" , my computer operates
aparently fine and much faster. Everytime I restart my
computer, however, that pesky ntvdm.exe restarts also.
I'm not sure what that program is used for but I'm
reluctant to remove it permanently from my Windows System
32 folder. Does anyone know what this file is and whether
it can safely be removed from the system 32 folder?
Thanks!

NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) is the driver for old 16-bit "DOS"
compatible programs. If you are running any old software, you'll need
this. I wouldn't remove it, no.

Get a better task manager than Task Manager. Process Explorer is free
from http://www.sysinternals.com - you can see what tasks are running
under NTVDM, what modules are in those tasks, and who makes the
modules.

I would bet you might want to run a malware check - 95% of cpu sounds
suspicious. Spybot S&D and HijackThis are both free - you need expert
interpretation of HJT findings though. Start here:
