Just recently I noticed my system slowing down quite a bit and attempted to
defrag it as it was 68% fragmented. it would stop at 3% after several tries.
I installed Diskkeeper8 and that did the job, but only after rebooting
several times and resuming the defrag with diskkeeper. (20 gigabytes on a 60
gig drive) It took 6 hours. I noticed that when the machine is real slow,
bringing up Windows task manager, the CPU useage is 100% and stays there. No
apps running, no special services running, fairly recent OS install (4
months) No hardware changes. No adware, no spyware and no clue as to how
this is happening.

Heres the system;

AMD 1800+
ECS K7VTA3
512 pc333
Sound blaster Live 5.1
ATI Radeon 9600 pro
On Board NIC W/ DSL
All latest Windows signed drivers

Any ideas or where start? Thanks................

To start, run TASKMGR and select the Processes tab. You should be able to
figure out which specific process is using all those cycles by looking at
the CPU column. Once you know that you just need to figure out where it's
loading from.

After a reboot, I looked at all the processes in taskmnger and took note of
there status. After 30-40 minutes I looked again and found dfrgntfs.exe
running and taking 99% of the CPU cycles. Also defrag.exe was running and it
had not been there in the list at all before. not having any luck ending the
dfrgntfs.exe process. It stays there.....

It looks like you have diskeeper set to run automatically and it is using
all your cpu cycles. There should be a switch somewhere in diskeeper to turn
off the set it and run part of diskeeper. If you can't find it uninstall the
program then run the computer for a few hours\days and see if anything else
is taking the cpu cycles.
