Consider purchasing and installing a good internet security program:

i did that purchase norton. but it closes when the cpu
usage surges. it seems my system idle process takes and
wncffg.exe are taking up the 100% of the cpu.

It is normal for System Idle Process to use 95+% of CPU cycles. To
understand this, focus on the meaning of the word 'idle'.

If you are unable to open any programs, your computer might possibly have a
virus.

now the usage fluctuates up and down. it seems the system
idle process and wincffg.exe are using up the cpu.

i installed norton 2004 and no virus was detected.

.

You have a variant of the agobot worm (virus). If you are unable to remove
this with NAV then you should contact Symantec technical support for
assistance.

On Windows XP home edition, my cpu is running at 100%
Anyone know how to fix this?
.
Did you get a fix for this?
My XP Pro system is having same problem, and i have
narrowed it down to a process called spoolsv.exe.
However when I end the job, it just starts back up.

spoolsv.exe is the Printer Spooler
The Windows Printer Spooler stores printer jobs and forwards them to the printer when it is ready.
