CPU upgrade

Just got around to doing it, got a P4 2.8 GHz 478 and
replaced the 1.7 Celeron.

It runs much faster since the FSB is now at 533 instead of
the 400 MHz. It also runs cooler with the new P4 3.6 rated
copper cooler, about 5°C less than with the Celeron, about
33° on the CPU under light load,

Swap only took a few minutes, system booted immediately and
no problems or log-on issues.

Details Intel D845GBVL mobo
Windows XP Pro oem with system board from 2002 in September.

P4 2.8 GHz Northwood

Someday I'll have to get a dedicated video card.

I upgraded from a socket 939MB with a AMD 64x2 3800 to a Socket 775 Intel
Dual Core E6420 ........and no such luck as just stick in the
HD and boot............brand new installation using the same OEM XP Home
that I had on the 939MB for about 2 years...with no reactivation for about 3
months before the new install. Versus the Retail Bought XP Home full version
that I need to activate over the phone everytime I upgrade some major piece
of hardware on that system.........no matter how long its been since the
last upgrade.

The only change was the CPU and that was just a slightly
different Intel CPU. The BIOS on the D845GBVL has been
upgraded a long time ago to P17, so the new 2.8 GHz P4 was
immediately recognized. My only issue that was of concern
was if the OS thought it was in a "new computer" and needed
to be reactivated. Did not trigger the changed hardware.

In your case, you changed from AMD and thus needed to
reinstall the OS to get the proper drivers for the Intel
mobo and CPU. Your OS did see a new mobo, etc and thus you
had to reactivate.

If and when I upgrade this computer, it will be a graphics
card, I'm using on-board Intel now and that is enough since
I don't game.

Next computer will be a scratch build with a 775 quad-core,
but don't expect to do that until I win the lottery.

I have a Gigabyte mobo with the 650sli chipset ,2gig of Patriot DDR2 6400RAM
and the E6420 dualcore all setup with 2 120gb Seagates in a SATA RAID
array,1 Hitchi 320GB SATA HD,1 LG DL SATA DVD and a LG DL DVD on IDE with a
7800GT video card.I find the system to be fast but I find startup is a
little slower than in a previous non raid configeration.Overall performance
is better ......Video converts/burns a little faster not that I am sitting
there with a stopwatch.
I also have the machine overclocked from 8x266............to 8x400.Had a wee
bit of a heat problem with the NB heatsink but a special fan solved that.I
can run Orthos for 4 hours without the CPU temp exceeding 56c...using a
Thermalright HR-01 with a 120mm fan.
I love the damn thing..but if you would have asked me a few years back about
Intel it would have been a negative
