Would anyone know what my best choices are to upgrade my CPU

Motherboard = Asus #P4T-E
Chipset = Intel i850
Socket = Intel 478 pin uPGA
FSB = 400 MHz

FSB Properties:
Bus Type = Intel NetBurst
Bus Width = 64-bit
Real Clock = 110 MHz (QDR)
Effective Clock = 440 MHz
Bandwidth = 3520 MB/s

Memory Bus Properties:
Bus Type = Duel RDRAM
Bus Width = 32-bit
Real Clock = 440 MHz (DDR)
Effective Clock = 880 MHz
Bandwidth = 3520 MB/s

I currently have a Intel P4 2.0GHz 512k/400 Northwood A80532 CPU
(~10% overclocked)

Can I put a newer P4 Prescot 533/800 MHz CPU on this board?
Sure would like to upgrade to a 3.0+ GHz CPU if I could.

Thanks for any help!

And you first looked at Asus site, or in the manual, to check what cpu's
were supported?
That would have been quicker than typing all that data

These are all Northwood (0.13u) processors, at FSB400. There is
one faster one (P4 2.8GHz/FSB400 S478) which is not listed here. But
they're probably all gone from retail anyway.

In terms of alternatives, if may be possible to run the board
at FSB533, use PC1066 etc. Barry has a recipe here, which depends
on some kind of clock generator choice on the motherboard. You
could even try overclocking the board as it currently stands,
by selecting a different memory multiplier and then experimenting
with the CPU input clock. When doing overclocking experiments,
boot with a "non-volatile OS", such as a Linux LiveCD (Knoppix or
Ubuntu), as the CD cannot be corrupted if the PCI clock and IDE
controllers are running at the wrong speed.

If purchasing a processor, the thing to avoid, is 90nm processors.
Most of the S478 stuff you'll see for sale, will be 90nm.
Trade names are "Prescott" or "Celeron D". You don't want
those, because they'll "black screen" and won't post. A config
pin on the bottom of the Prescott processor, sees to that.

The fastest FSB533 S478 0.13u processor, is a 3.06GHz. Again,
be careful when shopping, as there is a Xeon that also fits
the description to some extent. (Like if you're looking on
Pricewatch.com) You'd use a purchase like that, if perhaps
you're having some luck with Barry's recipe.

So the "tame" option is P4 2.6GHz/FSB400 0.13u S478. If
the wind is blowing in the right direction, the answer
might be P4 3.06GHz/FSB533 0.13u S478.

Thanks for your reply Bob, that's what I was afraid of... but if I could
find the listed 2.6GHz P4 for $50 then overclock 10%, I might squeeze a
little more life out of the box.

Thanks again!

Why ask here? This is a pure hardware question that is irrelevant of
the OS.

Ask elsewhere

Hardware is what he is asking about. This is a hardware newsgroup ****wit.

It will fit because it is a 478 pin CPU, but no increase in
performance. It will under clock to match the rest of your
components. 478 pin parts are very few. Now the BIOS, Mainboard, CPU
and RAM capabilities must mach in order to get performance.

Hello Frank-FL,

Yeah, that's what I wanted to know... if a 800MHz CPU would only clock down
to 400MHz leaving me with a CPU running at less than rated speed.

Thanks for the answer!

About the best I see on eBay is a P4 478 400 2.6GHZ for about $65.
Overclocking 10% would yield 2.86GHz

I know when I overclocked my 2.0GHz by 10% I could really feel the
difference, kindof like adding 3-5psi to all four tires... nothing to right
home about, but certainly worth the stop at the filling station!

Again, thanks for the answer I was looking for!
