I have an amd athlon xp, 2200+, the temp of my cpu is 69 C. I guess
need a new cooling fan. Would it be a good idea to my a chassis fa
too

at what frequency is it RUNNING ?
You cannot monitor the fanspeeds ? if they rotate enough, they are ok.
And how is temperature measured ? in contact with the
heatsink/processor ?
then 69 is rather hot indeed... mine is 51 celsius now, when roomtemp
is near 30. (so says the temp. monitoring program)
max allowed temp is set to 85 for Mobo AND CPU. (Athlon XP 2500+
running however at 1466 MHz it says)
from http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.php?content=maxtemp.shtml
I believe 69 is a borderline case. Time for spring cleanig.

FYI: th air coming out of PSU right now is 37 to 39 C, the air coming
out of the CPU heatsink is 39.8 C (I put a sensor on the heatsink, it
not making direct contact however)
The monitor program says 44 for case temp and 51 for CPU temp.

Question: could I let the CPU run at higher freq. with these data ?
And how do I do that ?
IN the BIOS screen I have a field CPU frequency multiple. Should I
change that ? to what then ?

I sometimes clean the fans and the heatsinks.
A lot of dust gathers on them, disturbing the airflow.
A soft paintbrush and a vacuumcleaner.
ground the machine before.
I replaced a fan when it started to make noise, a sign of worn
bearings and lower speeds.

Yes. It could not hurt to get a chassis fan.

It depends on why it's running so hot.

What's different about your system than everyone elses? An
XP2200 with a decent heatsink, case cooling and moderate
ambient room temp would be closer to 40C.

You didn't even bother to tell us what the system was doing
while the temp was at 69C though, apparently you don't care
much if it's running hot else you'd have posted more than
two lines of text.
