does anyone know anywhere i can find out what the recommended operatitn
temparatues of cpu's is
i have a athlon Xp 2400 thorabread core, and seems to be running a bit hot -
but im not sure - its running at around 60-64 c
The temp reading taken to evaluate cooling must be taken under an extended
full load condition. Program such as "CPUBurn" (Google will find it),
running at "K7" setting and "Normal" or better yet, "High" priority,
should run for at least 30 minutes. At that point note the CPU temp AND
the ambient room temp. Adjust the ambient room temp if the room is
subject to temp increase (for example, summertime in general or winter if
system is near a heat vent), as that room temp increase will correspond to
an increase in CPU temp.
Considering full load temp, 64C is near the ceiling you could expect for
stability of a XP2400 T'Bred. However many motherboards are a bit
inaccurate in their temp readings, perhaps up to 6-8C off. Ideally your
CPU should be about 10-15C cooler than it is but that might require an
expensive heatsink change or time-consuming case modifications. If the
case has poor airflow there might be other items besides the CPU
overheating too, yet another area to look at.
So long as it stays stable and the rest of the system seems cool enough
you can take a wait-n-see attitude, but if this is a mission-critical
system you might want to test it a bit more.
