cpu temp?

what would be considered a normal operation cpu temp for an amd xp2000 using
the cpu fan supplied with the xp2000?
i have used the volcano heatsink/fan on a couple of my pc's with normal
temps around 50c, however due to the physical size of the volcano i seem to
be having a few probs with it properly seating on the cpu (i do use thermal
paste & have increased the tension on the latching mechanism) and i thought
i would try out the amd fan just for interest.
the temp using the amd fan seem to sit around 70c ... this seems to me to be
a bit hot!!
can anyone advise if this is a normal temp for this type of heatsink?

Is that 70°C under load, or idle? If idle, then it's more than a bit hot,
it's practically on the threshold of burn-up! Even 50° idle is too warm.
When I used to have an Athlon it would idle between 30 and 35° and rise to
45° under load. I was using a Zalman fan 'sink.
 
currently sitting on 71C at idle !!
if i take a cover off the tower to allow more airflow it drops to around 66C
think i might go back to the volcano again ... :-(

Im using the stock heatsink , I usually use a volcano.
Im using the AMD one that came with the 2500 AMD barton which is OCed
to 3200 AND Im using the thermal pad that came with it not thermal
grease. I decided to do that though people usually take it off because
I had problems putting the clip on and was paranoid Id chip the die on
it jiggling the heatsink around as I fussed with the clip. The pad is
thick so I thought it would give me more leeway since it acts like a
cushion on the die.


Anyway I get around 114 F idle.
And I live near the equator. Its in a full tower case.

With the stock setup mine maxed out at 59C under 100% load and
no thermal paste (just the stock pad -- this was before I knew
better).

That's way to high.I would stop using the system and check that you
have seated the HS the correct way round and flush to the Raised
Athlon core.

That's awful hot. I've got the same CPU in the retail kit using the
supplied fan and thermal tape in an Antec case. I've got 1 fan on the
bottom front of the case pulling in cool air, one above it pulling in cool
air over the hard drives, and two fans on the back near the top pulling out
the hot air. This is in addition to the power supply fan. I'm afraid I've
forgotten the specs on the fans. I rarely see anything over 40c. The normal
range is 33c to 38c. Currently I'm seeing 33c.
