"Motherboard Monitor" from http://mbm.livewiredev.com
The "simple" part is paring down what you DON'T want to see.
Mine starts at boot, and displays the temp in the systray.
Cheers,

I like SpeedFan. Works with most systems, no convoluted setup.

Google for it.

I use MBProbe v. 131beta9:

Howver, link appears to be dead, try:
????????????????????

MBProbe is a program which monitors voltages, temperatures and fan
speeds using monitoring chip(s) present on many modern motherboards.
Its features include:
* Small memory footprint.
* Up to 9 voltage, 4 temperature and 3 fan speed readings.
* Automatic detection of monitoring chips.
* Setting of nominal voltage and fan speeds with warning and critical
thresholds.
* Setting of temperature warning and critical limits and offset
readings.
* Setting of sensor used for each temperature reading.
* Temperature display in Celsius or Fahrenheit.
* Customisable task when any temperature exceeds critical limit for
more than 30 seconds continuously.
* Ignores fan warnings for 10 seconds after system comes out of
suspend.
* Swappable temperature display in status icon on taskbar.
* Event and history logs.

No offense, but that's the most confusing program I ever used. It was fine
years ago, but has become more bizarre with each new release.

Afaik there has not been a new release since the one mentioned above,
i.e. it has become abandonware, but it still does its job here.

If you are running an AMD cpu look at VCool at vcool.occludo.net
It does other things as well, enables cooling of the cpu, at least with
the VIA chipset (and it works in win xp). But if you are not interested
in the cooling feature, you can just use it as a temp monitor in the
system tray. It can also throttle down the system and stop the system
if the temps rise above your choice of preset levels. Nice little
program.
